Place de la Concordeaaa

Everything about this square – site, size, general elegance – is impressive, particularly the obelisk, which dominates the scene. Place de la Concorde is one of the most beautiful squares in Paris, but also one of the busiest. The point of the obelisk indicates international time, making it the largest sundial in the world.

Rue de Rivoli

Rue de Rivoli crosses the site of the former Tuileries Riding School. In 1789 the school was hastily converted into a meeting place for the Constituent Assembly. Sessions were subsequently held there by the Legislative Assembly and the Convention. On 21 September 1792, the day following the French victory over the Prussians at Valmy (commemorative tablet on a pillar in the Tuileries railings opposite no 230), it became the setting for the proclamation of the Republic and the trial of Louis XVI.

In 1944 the German General von Choltitz, Commandant of Paris, who had his headquarters at the Hôtel Meurice (no 228), took a momentous decision in the capital’s own history by refusing to follow Hitler’s orders to blow up the capital’s bridges and principal buildings when the tanks of General Leclerc’s division and the Resistance were known to be approaching. He surrendered on 25 August and Paris was liberated intact. At the far end by place de la Concorde several commemorative plaques record the heroism of those who fell during the Liberation.

/Along rue de Rivoli, the Tuileries Garden has a wide range of activities for children with merry-go-rounds, donkey riding (Wednesdays and weekends) and several play areas. There is also a pond in the middle where small toy sailing boats can be rented (in the summer).
